A funeral in 1976 and an inheritance in 1999 bring Afrish full circle through the lives of Sidney Higgins, Meisie Marais and old Mrs. Thomas. Between Cape Town and Stellenbosch, Sidney Higgins is at the helm of a multimillion-rand business empire and a wine estate, and is ready to embark on his first serious relationship when an enormous shock places his future aspirations on hold... Meisie Marais guards her tracks for three decades after running away from home in Stellenbosch in 1976, not trusting anyone with her apartheid-era past. Her past eventually revisits at a time when Meisie is experiencing a different, unrelated emotional trauma that drives her to the brink of suicide... In a Cape Flats township, 70-ish-year-old Mrs. Thomas wrestles with her identity in the new South Africa when the process of reconciliation had still not addressed the question of her dead son?s father, by law prohibited from marrying her all those years ago during apartheid... The influences in their separate lives force each, at some stage to address identity from a perspective of atonement. Mrs. Thomas is nearing the end of her life, Meisie Marais is in the middle of hers, and Sidney Higgins is just beginning to usurp the pleasure of adulthood and a successful future. Will Sidney Higgins find his peace? Will Meisie Marais live? Will Mrs. Thomas forgive? Could each possibly be a winner? | ||||
